Coaching Corner - A resource!
Finishing Well
I recently ran a 5K race with 2 girlfriends,
Heather and Jessica. It was a brisk autumn day and we all decided
to race together. We started at the back of the pack because Jessica,
who was 8 weeks pregnant, was also pushing her 9 month old son in
a stroller. Can you imagine running your first 5K pregnant and pushing
a stroller? What determination!
As the race progressed, Jessica began to falter a bit with the pace.
On a long uphill, Heather graciously took the stroller to relieve
Jessica. I offered a steady stream of encouragement
nice job,
almost to the top, hang in there, breathe, you are a powerful woman.
In the end, we walked some and ran some, but 46 minutes later we
triumphantly passed the precious finish line!
The next day
when I checked the race results, I had come in 525th place out of
540. I felt a brief moment of embarrassment with the meager placing.
And then I thought, how fantastic! Heather and I had laid down our
own personal agendas and come alongside a friend so she could have
her moment in the stars. I know I could have run faster. And Heather
well, she ran a half-marathon the next day! But finishing well doesn't
always mean being the fastest or best. Sometimes it just means that
you found joy in the journey.
As we come to
the end of October, what would finishing the year well look like
for you? What goals or projects have been just out of reach, that
if you accomplished them would make all the difference? What would
crossing your finish line look like? And who can you ask to join
you in the journey? Go for it and see what happens! And if you'd
like someone to help you define your own personal finish line and
determine what it would take to cross it, consider coaching as a
way to make that happen. I'd be honored to run your 5k with you.
With love,
Jane A. Perry
